Kayla Mae Olmstead

Kayla was born with Left-sided Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (LCDH). When she was born she was in the NICU for a total of 55 days. She reherniated two years later, had her repair surgery in May 2011 and spent 11 days in hospital recovering. She is a tough little girl and we are truly blessed to have her here.

The Stomach Bug

This past Sunday Jerry, Kayla and I went to Auburn, NY for a family fun day.  I know most of you are thinking, Auburn?? haha It's ok, we had a meeting there on Monday so we went down the day before.  We got to stop at the D'Angelo's for a couple hours.  Kayla had a great time playing in their water fun park in their front yard. :)  She got a couple of hugs from Mr. Charlie too. :) After our visit w/ the D'Angelo's we went to our hotel and had some dinner in an Irish Pub (my hubby's choice).  Then we went to the pool and Kayla had a blast.  She was shivering but do you think she wanted out? haha no way!! This girl is a fish!! :) She was even jumping off the side of the pool into Daddy's arms!  Of course Jer kept one hand on her hand at all times! For some reason Kayla LOVES hotels.  She runs from one end to the other all night.. putting her down to sleep is an issue tho.  She can't see me or Jerry... so there has to be a part in the room where we can put her where she can't see us.  She'll cry and cry- but eventually she'll go to sleep.  But Jer and I have to be VERY quiet!

Our trip home (3.5 hours-ish) Kayla was awful! She cried so much!  When we got home, she was much happier, and then it was bed time.  Around 10:30ish Kayla woke up crying hysterically.  However, Jer and I did not go get her bc sometimes that makes it much worse.  She feel back asleep only to wake up 2 min later and cough a little and then vomit a whole lot!! :( Jer and I RAN up the stairs, I grabbed K as she was sooo upset and Jer cleaned up the mess.  I got K downstairs and she was fantastic while I cleaned her up and then rocked in the chair w/ me for quite a bit.  She was trembling a bit so we got her some water and then went back upstairs.  She slept fine the rest of the night until 6:30 a.m. when she woke up crying again and then gagging.  I ran into the room and sat her on the floor w/ a blanket underneath.  Thank goodness nothing came out but she was obviously not feeling her best.  After about an hour of milk, she puked again- big time! However after that, she has been doing well.  I did get her into her pediatrician who listened to her and said she sounded good.  She said bowels are being heard where they need to be, ears look good, and fever is low enough to be called a normal temp.  We are still feeding her bland food and making her milk bottles about half but more often to keep it down.  We are hoping she sleeps well through the night and the bug is gone!

I guess you could say Jer and I have been a lot less of germaphobes... We take her to Walmart, restaurants, I stopped showering after work and just changed my clothes, and she's been around a bunch of kids in crowded places.  I just want her to be exposed to the germs, but not get the sick part.. guess I can't have it my way... :)

Other than the bug, Kayla is doing great!! :) We are still waiting for her to say some real words, other than uh-oh and hi.  But I'm getting less and less worried as she is communicating in the beginning stages that most of your babies did earlier on. :)  Kayla does things in her OWN time..!

Here are some cute pics of her that I have also posted on FB- so sorry if they are doubles for some of you! :)
